Alkaline phosphatase (ALP or ALK) possesses a hydrolytic activity removing phosphate groups from protein and non-protein molecules. ALP is present in all mammalian tissues, and multiple isozymes are differentially distributed in the body. While abnormal ALP levels can signal a wide range of clinical conditions, the primary importance of measuring ALP is diagnosis of bone or liver disease, although an elevated ALP usually requires other tests to determine the origin of the pathology. ALP elevation also serves as an osteogenic differentiation marker. The enzyme assay kit is based on ALP-mediated conversion of p-nitrophenol phosphate (PNPP) to nitrophenol in an alkaline buffer.
