Calcium is essential for building strong bones/teeth, maintaining muscle function, initiating the blood clotting process, and regulating blood pressure and heart rhythm. At the molecular level, the mineral is a ubiquitous second messenger: calcium signaling mediates many cellular events, including muscle cell contraction, secretion of hormones and neurotransmitters, and fertilization of oocytes. Calcium levels in the blood are regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin through targeting the skeleton, kidneys, and intestines. Hypercalcemia can be caused by parathyroid gland disorders, cancer, excess vitamin D, and certain medications. Hypocalcemia is associated with parathyroid gland disease, kidney failure, vitamin D deficiency, and certain medications. The Calcium Assay Kit is based on the o-cresolphthalein complexone (CPC) method, where calcium reacts with CPC in an alkaline solution, forming a violet-colored complex and enabling measurement of calcium ion present in biological fluids (serum/plasma, urine, saliva), culture medium, and cell/tissue homogenates by light absorbance at 575 nm.
