Tissue calcification, often manifested as calcium phosphate deposits or nodules, is a multifaceted process that involves not only the gain of inducers of calcification but also the loss of calcification suppressors. Vascular calcification for instance is prevalent in aging and many pathological conditions, and is recognized as a strong predictor of cardiovascular events in the general population as well as diabetic and end-stage renal disease patients. Von Kossa staining has been the most widely used method for indirectly identifying the presence of calcium in tissue since 1901. The classical von Kossa method for calcium staining employs a solution of silver nitrate, which reacts with tissue calcium phosphate deposits. Subsequent strong light exposure reduces silver ions to metallic silver, which then appears as black deposits. The von Kossa method is therefore a metal substitution technique transforming calcium salts to metal salts. The kit is for histological visualization of calcium deposits in culture dishes and paraffin or frozen tissue sections.
