Primary cells and cell lines are routinely preserved through cryopreservation, which requires the use of special medium to prevent ice formation at freezing temperature and avoid osmotic shock and cell membrane damage during cell thawing. Many cryoprotective agents (CPA) have been used to achieve these effects. Cell membrane-permeating and nonmembrane permeating CPAs are available, which include dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), glycerol, propanediol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), hydroxyethyl starch, and various sugars. Our Cell Freezing Medium (CFM), which is uniquely formulated to maximize cell viability through inclusion of a cell membrane-permeating CPA and an antioxidant, is offered in two formats: fetal bovine serum-based (CFM-F) and human serum-based (CFM-H). CFM-H is ideal for cryopreservation of human cells free of xenogeneic components.
